Sheriff: Jail needs new health provider

ILLINOIS - Sheriff Neil Williamson wants the Sangamon County Board to hire a new medical provider for the county jail, where three inmates died in separate incidents late last year. The sheriff also said he plans on adopting practically all of the recommendations of a consultant who examined the jail’s medical wing, including a suggestion that nurses be given the authority to send sick inmates to the hospital without first getting a doctor’s approval.

“It’s clear (from the consultant) that some changes in the jail are necessary,” Williamson said. “As sheriff, part of my responsibility is overseeing the jail. … We have already made some improvements.”

Williamson’s comments came after he released the results of a study authorized by the county board in January of the jail’s medical wing. Read more.
